The Rockets excelling this season, even with Yao out

It’s amazing that the Rockets are 30-17 and only 8.5 games behind the Mavericks in the Southwest Division.  When Yao went down, many thought the Rockets would go down the tubes too.  But, Dikembe Mutombo and Juwan Howard have both stepped up and have driven the Rockets to continued success as a team.  The Rockets have all bought into Coach Jeff Van Gundy’s philosophy of playing great defense.  The Rockets are #1 in team defense as they allow only 90.6 points per game and they hold the opposition to 42.1% shooting from the floor which is also #1 in the NBA!  The Rockets also hit the defensive boards very hard as they get 76.4% of the boards at that end of the court which is also #1 in the NBA.  This team will be a serious Championship contender if they keep Yao and McGrady healthy at playoff time.
